The Village of Senneville wishes to remind residents of the importance of adopting safe practices when encountering a raccoon or any other wild animal. The Government du Québec has implemented a plan to fight against raccoon rabies. While it is common to observe wildlife throughout our community, raccoons are now at a greater risk of carrying rabies.
Rabies is a serious and potentially fatal disease that is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, typically through a bite or scratch. If you are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately. Once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease progresses rapidly and is almost always fatal.
A rabid raccoon may display the following signs: unusual or disoriented behaviour, abnormal aggression and
lack of fear toward humans.
However, an animal infected with rabies may not exhibit all of these symptoms. It is therefore recommended to avoid all contact with wild animals, even if they appear healthy.
Prevention tips:
• Do not feed wild animals.
• Keep garbage, compost, and pet food in secure containers.
• Ensure your pets’ rabies vaccinations are up to date.
• Teach children not to approach wild animals.
