With the return of warm weather, Montréal’s waterways become popular destinations for relaxation and water activities. To help you make the most of your time on the water safely, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) would like to remind you of a few important safety tips to follow.
1. Life jackets are a must
Each person on board must have a properly fitted and easily accessible personal flotation device (PFD). Did you know that wearing a life jacket can save lives in an emergency? Don’t leave it behind.
2. Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs
Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited. Offenders face penalties similar to those for impaired driving on the road, including fines, arrest, and a criminal record. Boating sober means boating safely.
3. Plan your outing
Check the weather before heading out and make sure your boat is in good working condition. Always carry a compliant boating safety kit, including distress signals, a whistle, and a throw rope. These simple tools can make a big difference in an emergency.
4. Stay connected
Have a reliable means of communication on board, such as a cell phone or VHF radio, so you can reach emergency services if needed.
5. Respect navigation zones
Keep a safe distance from swimmers and other vessels. Follow speed limits, especially near shorelines, and pay close attention to navigation signs. Responsible boating protects everyone.
6. In case of emergency, call 911
The SPVM works in partnership with other emergency services to respond quickly on the water. If you witness dangerous behavior or an emergency situation, don’t hesitate to call 911.
